Police arrested two more persons in connection with the murder of the Nadia Trinamul’s minority-wing leader Motirul Islam from a hideout in Dum Dum early on Sunday morning.

Motirul, a resident of the Narayanpur area of Nadia’s Karimpur, was hacked and shot dead by a gang of armed goons near a ferry ghat in Murshidabad’s Nowda on November 25 when he was returning home in the evening on a motorcycle after meeting his son who studies in a boarding school.

Police said that acting on a tip-off, Murshidabad police raided a house in Dumdum and arrested Rajkumar Kabiraj and Pinku Mondal. Both the accused are residents of Narayanpur in Nadia and are known Trinamul activists, local sources said.

The duo in their early 30s were named in the FIR lodged by the slain leader’s wife Rina and produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Behrampore on Sunday. The court ordered the duo 10 days in police custody.

With the two fresh arrests, police so far nabbed nine persons in connection with the murder of the ruling party leader. However, Rajkumar and Pinku are the only arrested named in the FIR.

The police had begun a probe based on a complaint lodged by Rina, who is the chief of Trinamul-ruled Narayanpur-2 gram panchayat in Nadia. The police earlier arrested seven persons in the case but none was named in the FIR.

Additional superintendent of police (Murshidabad) Subimal Pal said: “We arrested two FIR-accused persons on Sunday. They have a suspected role in the murder and were absconding. Other FIR-accused persons will be traced out by police and arrested.”

Rina had alleged Nowda police’s apathy towards a “proper probe”, ostensibly owing to the political connections of those named in her police complaint. Her FIR named Nadia Trinamul women’s wing leader and zilla parishad member Tina Saha Bhowmick and Nowda block chief Safiur Zaman Sheikh. Safiur is Trinamul’s Murshidabd MP Abu Taher Khan’s nephew.
