According to the officers, the rider, identified as Mohammad Hussain, 19, a resident of Howrah, and Raju Rao, 19, the pillion rider, were allegedly without helmets.

“The motorcycle rammed into the median divider of AJC Bose Road flyover around 12.32am on Sunday,” said an officer of Hastings police station.

“Both were taken to SSKM Hospital where Hussain succumbed to his injuries at 4.30am. Raju is under treatment,” said the officer.

The police said the vehicle had been seized and would undergo a mechanical test to ascertain if it had developed some technical snag or if the accident was the outcome of a human error.

Cops said they were also in the process of collecting CCTV to check if any other vehicle was present in the vicinity at the time of the crash.

Senior police officers of the traffic department said it was always advisable for riders to wear helmets to safeguard their lives.
