Around 160 illegal buildings in the Siliguri civic area have been demolished in the past three years, representatives of the Trinamul-run board at Siliguri Municipal Corporation claimed on Friday.

“During the tenure of the board of administrators in 2021 and after coming to power in SMC in February, 2022, we have carried out a consistent drive against the unauthorized buildings and have demolished a total 160 such structures so far. The drive will continue,” said Ranjan Sarkar, the deputy mayor.

He was speaking at the monthly meeting of the board of councillors at the civic body on Friday.

Sarkar said they have received 295 complaints about such illegal constructions across 47 wards of SMC.

“Almost 55 per cent of the complaints have been taken care of and illegal buildings removed. On the other hand, when the Left board was in power (2016 to 2021) in SMC, they had received 64 such complaints but could execute only 18,” he said.
