Calcutta University has completed the process of appointing a full-time placement officer and the curator of Asutosh Museum — the two key posts lying vacant for more than 15 years.

The names of the shortlisted candidates were placed before the syndicate, the university’s highest decision-making body, on Friday. The syndicate had unanimously approved both appointments, vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said.

The new curator joined on Monday. The placement officer has not yet responded to his appointment letter, a university official said.

Students of the engineering and technology departments had been demanding a full-time placement officer and a proper placement cell for long. In the absence of an officer, students have had to fend for themselves when it came to securing jobs.

BTech and MTech students of Calcutta University had organised an “indefinite” agitation last year demanding a placement officer and a full-fledged placement cell. The higher education department had then granted the university permission to appoint a full-time placement officer.

“We hope to coordinate with companies in a better manner now,” the vice-chancellor said.

The post of the curator of Asutosh Museum had been lying vacant since the start of the last decade, the university official said.

The museum, set up in 1937, has a rich collection of paintings, manuscripts, sculptures, coins and terracotta exhibits.

The Kalighat patas, too, are significant, the official said. Besides, the terracota gallery is unique in the museum. “No other museum in the country has this kind of a collection. A full-time curator was urgently needed to ensure proper maintenance of valuable artefacts.”
