Film producer Shrikant Mohta was on Friday remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody by a CBI court in Bhubaneswar after the central agency refrained from seeking his custody citing his “poor health”.
Mohta was arrested in Calcutta on Thursday in connection with an allegation by jailed Rose Valley chief Goutam Kundu that Mohta’s Shri Venkatesh Films had breached a Rs 24-crore contract for films.
A jail hospital in Bhubaneswar will be Mohta’s home till his health improves and he can be shifted to a cell. He will be produced before the special chief judicial magistrate’s court again on February 7. Mohta’s bail application will be heard on January 29.
Sources in the CBI said the primary focus of the probe would be to establish the money trail of the Rs 15,000-crore Rose Valley deposit-default scam.
“He (Mohta) in a way shared the proceeds of the crime as he benefited from the group by taking Rs 24 crore to produce films…,” a CBI officer said.
A senior CBI officer claimed that there was evidence to suggest that the money taken from Rose Valley was used to buy some paintings.
Last November, the CBI had seized 10 paintings of Mamata that had been purchased by Calcutta businessman Shibaji Panja years ago.
Sources said CBI sources were contacting art critics and assessors to evaluate the price of certain paintings.
