Lalbazar had asked all police stations in the run-up to Holi to remain vigilant on Thursday.

“We booked a lot of helmet-less bikers. Usually, people have a tendency to flout rules on festive days but we wanted to stop that. Festivals must be celebrated following rules,” a police officer said.

Since morning, the police were stopping speeding cars and bikes whose riders were without helmets. The vigil continued even in the afternoon. Metro spotted a police team stopping bikers without helmets at the crossing of SN Banerjee Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road in the afternoon.

The maximum number of arrests — 36 — was from the east suburban division, which includes areas such as Entally, Maniktala, Ultadanga and Narkeldanga. Twenty persons were arrested in the north division, which includes Amherst Street, Sinthee, Cossipore and Jorabagan.

There were no arrests in the east and southeast divisions.

There was no seizure of illicit liquor this Holi, officers said.
