An inmate at Dum Dum jail allegedly committed suicide on Sunday, a day after violence broke out at the correctional home and left at least one inmate dead.
There was a fresh round of violence inside the jail on Sunday, leaving two inmates seriously injured. The two, including a woman, have been admitted to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sources said jail officers were yet to control the situation. On Sunday, inmates had broken a wall separating the women’s section from the men’s.
Trouble started on Saturday morning over protests against the decision that the inmates would not be allowed to meet visitors to prevent spread of the coronavirus on the jail premises.
Several rounds of bullets were fired on Saturday to control the situation. Purported images and videos of inmates scaling the boundary wall in an attempt to flee were doing the rounds.
Sources said as the jail officers had not been able to do the head count of the inmates even on Sunday, it was not clear how many had escaped during the commotion.
Agitating inmates had set the jail kitchen on fire by bursting LPG cylinders on Saturday.
Acting under pressure, the correctional services department was forced to revoke the earlier order, issued late on Saturday, and announced that the inmates can meet visitors.
Some home department officials had described the incident as a “major administrative lapse”.
“The situation could have been better managed. There will be an inquiry into the matter,” a senior home department official at Nabanna had said.
