The brutal "rape and murder" of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor inside the premises of a state-run hospital in Calcutta has sent shockwaves across the nation. The victim (31) was found dead in a seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, partially clothed, bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts.
A blue mattress on which her body was found, was completely soaked in blood. Initial autopsy found at least 10 injuries on her body. Yet her father said he received a phone call in the morning from an assistant superintendent of RG Kar who said his daughter had died by suicide. Her injuries were so grave it prompted doctors to ask if this was a case of gang-rape, a claim Calcutta police has denied.
Part of a pair of earphones found beside the body, unmasked a Calcutta police civic volunteer, who was not associated with the hospital, but had easy access to the premises, even post midnight. The postgraduate trainee doctor had been on duty that night and decided to stay back at the seminar hall to rest for some time in the middle of a long shift.
