NEET row leaves 24 lakh students in the lurch, who's to blame?

Despite CBI probe and arrests from Gujarat and Bihar, the NTA and education minister continue to maintain that the examination had been conducted in a fair manner.

On June 27, the CBI made its first arrest in Patna in the NEET-UG case over paper leaks.

The NEET-UG exam (National Eligibility-Cum Entrance Test) was conducted on May 5, across 4,750 centers, with nearly 24 lakh candidates appearing for it. The results that were out on June 4 raised eyebrows due to discrepancies and allegations of paper leak. 67 candidates secured an absolute 720/720 while only two applicants got an All India Rank #1.

The CBI took over the investigation on June 24. Despite CBI arrests from Gujarat and Bihar, the National Testing Agency and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan continue to maintain that the examination had been conducted in a fair manner. On June 19, the NTA declared UGC-NET 2024 exam cancelled stating that the exam’s integrity had been compromised’. Over 9 lakh candidates had appeared for the exam.

Both the exams have now left lakhs of students in the lurch, triggering nationwide protests by students on the streets and the Opposition inside the Parliament. We retrace what went wrong...
