Questions over PM panel data on minority population

The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM)published on May 7, 2024 a working paper on the share of religious minorities in 167 countries, including India. The paper has noted that the share of Hindu population had decreased by 7.8 per cent while that of Muslim population had increased by 43.1 per cent between 1950 and 2015.

What this report did not seek to highlight is that all of India's largest religious groups have grown substantially since 1950. Population Foundation of India, a non-government organisation that advocates population health, has called the panel’s interpretation “misleading and baseless.” It has expressed deep concerns about media reports misrepresenting the data.
