Calcutta horror brings back memories of Aruna Shanbaug — why her case still matters

While a hearing a suo motu petition in the case of a young trainee doctor's horrific rape and murder while on duty, at her workplace, in Calcutta's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, memories of another medical practitioner brutally raped and left to die while on duty, at her workplace echoed in the corridors of the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recalled the sexual assault of Aruna Shanbaug in 1973, at Mumbai's King Edward Memorial Hospital. After the assault, Aruna remained a live cadaver for the rest of her life. But in her death in 2015, she helped reform euthanasia laws in India.
