On August 16 2024, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee led a protest rally in Calcutta demanding justice for a postgraduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered while on duty inside a seminar hall of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She also asked for capital punishment for the accused.
But this wasn't Mamata's first fight for justice.
In 1993, Mamata, then an Opposition leader under Jyoti Basu-led CPI(M) government in West Bengal, had led a protest for a deaf and mute girl. Allegedly a CPI(M) cadre had raped her. She and the victim were dragged by the hair by Calcutta protest.
She fought for justice then and now. But here's the difference...
