A month after the sexual assault of two minor girls inside a private school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur sparked massive protests, accused Akshay Shinde was killed by a police officer in "self-defence".
Police in their complaint said, when their vehicle reached the Mumbra bypass, Akshay suddenly snatched an assistant police inspector's pistol. In the ensuing scuffle, the pistol got unlocked, one round got fired and the bullet hit the assistant inpector, allegedly prompting a police officer to shoot Shinde in retaliation.
The killing has snowballed into a political slugfest with many calling foul play.
