Phoolbagan: The husband of a 36-year-old homemaker who was found murdered at her father's apartment in Phoolbagan last week was arrested at Howrah station on Thursday.
Dipak Jain had left the city on August 2, within hours of Puja Jain's murder. He was arrested minutes after he got off a train from New Delhi, police said.
Dipak, a garment trader from Howrah, has confessed to killing his wife, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, in a fit of rage.
"After leaving Calcutta, Dipak visited several places and finally reached Delhi. While tracking him, we realised he was running short of funds and was about to head home to Calcutta," a senior officer of Phoolbagan police station said. "We found him boarding an express train. He reached Howrah around 6.05 this evening and was arrested immediately on his arrival."
Deepak had visited the Phoolbagan house when Puja was alone on Thursday evening. Puja's sister Manjari had told the police that she suspected Dipak had killed her.
Puja had moved out of her marital home in the Howrah Maidan area after she became pregnant. She had twice undergone abortions at the behest of Dipak and was apparently determined not to lose another baby.
Dipak will be produced in a city court on Friday.
"We will now question Dipak to find out why he was averse to having a child," the officer said.
