Sept. 9: A two-and-a-half-year-old girl died after falling into a drain in front of her home in Taratala this morning.

Police said Aliya Turia was playing outside her Goragacha Road home before she went missing around 9.30am.

When her parents couldn't find her, they raised the alarm, an officer of Taratala police station said. "People in the neighbourhood started looking for the girl," the officer said.

About an hour later, someone spotted her in the drain near her home.

The girl was unconscious when she was fished out of the water. She was taken to Vidyasagar hospital and then to SSKM Hospital where she was declared dead.

Body found

The decomposed body of a 40-year-old woman was found in her Kalighat flat today. Madhumita Saha used to live alone, the police said.
