Jonaki, a female adult elephant employed by a circus, was released in the wild at Jaldapara on Wednesday after a complaint was filed by a Malda resident who said the animal was not being taken care of by the circus owners.
The Malda district court ordered that the elephant be handed over to the divisional forest officer in the district.
The elephant was first kept in a deer park. As no facility was available to take care of an elephant there, the court ruled that the jumbo should be shifted to the Jaldapara National Park.
