The campaign against the Narendra Modi government’s citizenship drive has reached the Malda District Book Fair.

Members and volunteers of the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights, Mukto Bhabna-Jukto Swor and some other organisations were found roaming around the Malda College ground, the venue of the fair, campaigning against the CAA, NRC and the NPR.

The book fair was inaugurated on January 21 by eminent writer Swapnamoy Chakraborty. He stressed the need for harmony and peace among different communities in his speech.

“We have decided to take our campaign against the NRC, NPR and the CAA to the peak by interacting with the intelligentsia of Malda who are largely available at the book fair. On an average, around 10,000 people visit the fair every day. We will be continuing our campaign till January 28 when the fair ends,” said Nabendu Chatterjee, an APDR activist in early sixties.

“We want the learned section of the society to join the movement as it would encourage more and more common people to come out in the open against the CAA. Getting support from the men of letters is a lot for us,” said Pradip Bagchi, a former bank employee and the convener of the Mukto Bhabna, Jukto Swor.

At the venue, many members of the organisations explained the drawbacks of the NRC, NPR and the CAA to the visitors.

“Thankfully, most of the people we approach spare few minutes for us. Many of them have counter questions which make our task easier. We want a logical discussion and we are quite satisfied with first three days of the campaign,” said a volunteer.

Those who were seen listening to the activists did not hesitate to receive a booklet explaining the “loopholes” in the NRC & CAA against Rs 2. “We have also distributed the booklet at all 200 stalls,” Bagchi said.

The organisers informed that they would demonstrate at Gandhi Dharmashala on January 28 in protest against the NRC, NPR and the CAA from dawn to dusk.

On February 3, the organisations together would hold a convention at Town Hall.
