Supporters of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha and the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front were involved in a clash at Tarey Bhir in South Sikkim on Sunday afternoon, resulting in damage to at least three vehicles and injuries to unconfirmed number of people.

The SKM and the SDF blamed each other for the clash that took place when a convoy of SDF president and former chief minister Pawan Chamling was returning from Sadam Suntaley, also in South Sikkim. The convoy came across supporters of the SKM at Tareybhir and both the groups were involved in angry exchanges that led to stone pelting.

Komal, the younger daughter of Chamling who was accompanying her father, alleged that the SKM supporters pelted some of the SDF supporters in the convoy with stones when they were trying to remove a vehicle that was parked bang on the road to block traffic. “Some of our supporters were injured and four vehicles were damaged,” she told The Telegraph.

The ruling party in a release issued in the evening, however, accused the SDF of triggering the clash under the direction of Chamling. “SKM party expresses concern and condemns the hooliganism and violence let loose by SDF supporters at the direction of Pawan Chamling,” it said.

Police confirmed the incident, but said they were trying to ascertain which party was responsible for the clash. “We received a complaint from the SKM accusing SDF supporters of triggering the clash. The SDF is yet to lodge a complaint,” said a police source.

Komal alleged the police refused to entertain the SDF complaint.
