A Sikkim Democratic Front spokesman, J.B. Darnal, was allegedly assaulted with a blunt object by two unidentified persons while he was on his way to the party office on Indira Bypass here on Friday afternoon.
“He suffered injury near the right temple. He is in hospital now,” said Asit Rai, also an SDF spokesman.
Rai said he had reason to suspect the involvement of the SKM in the attack because of Darnal’s recent outburst against the state government.
A senior SKM leader, however, denied the involvement of his party supporters in the incident.
“We unequivocally condemn the incident. There is no place for violence in a democracy,” he asserted.
Police sources said no arrest had been made and the matter was being investigated.
