Over 1,200 tourists, stuck in north Sikkim for the past week, were rescued by the Sikkim government through roadways on the second day of evacuation on Tuesday.
The over 1,200 stranded tourists included two from Thailand, three from Nepal and 10 from Bangladesh.
The situation, however, is still precarious inbecause of widespread destruction caused by heavy rains on the intervening night of June 12 and 13.
The district administration of flood-hit Mangan on Tuesday also issued a notice to shut down all educational institutions until further orders.
“The second day of evacuation of tourists from Lachung and surrounding regions began around 8am today (Tuesday). As informed by ADM Mangan (Vishu Lama), a total of 1,225 tourists reached Mangan today,” a press statement by the Sikkim government read.
On Monday, a total of 65 tourists were rescued from north Sikkim.
Nagarjan Reddy of Andhra Pradesh said he travelled to 52 countries before reaching Sikkim on June 11. "I came from South Africa to Nepal and then Lachung (Sikkim), and got stuck. The Sikkim police, the army and the local people were very helpful,” said Reddy.
