Patna: The RJD is in shock after Jharkhand High Court refused to extend the provisional bail to party chief Lalu Prasad and asked him to surrender by August 30.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) also filed the chargesheet against Lalu, his wife Rabri Devi and younger son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav in the railway hotels case, but it was the refusal of bail extension that shocked the RJD first family more.

Lalu is suffering from diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney failure. In 2014, he underwent heart valve replacement in Mumbai. Recently, he had undergone fistulectomy (surgery for fistula). He has developed abscess in the suprapubic area, his diabetes is spiralling out of control, and he is on antibiotic treatment.

Lalu's family members also said he is suffering from a hernia problem, glaucoma and beta thalassaemia, a blood disorder that reduces the production of haemoglobin.

Requesting anonymity, a family member of Lalu said: "As the court has refused to extend his bail, we spoke to him over phone and he said that he will return to Patna on August 29. The next day he will go to Ranchi as per the court order. We do not think that he will get the required treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). His recent operation has not yet properly healed."

The family member also said that they might approach the Supreme Court with a request to allow him bail for better treatment.

JDU spokesperson Ajay Alok said: "We do not give any political comment on court order but personally we do feel sorry for Lalu ji and his family."

Ajay, however, stuck it into the RJD first family over the ED chargesheet.

"There was a tweet of Tejashwi a few months back in which he was daring the CBI and ED to file chargesheet against him. I will suggest to them (Lalu's sons) not to challenge the might of law in this country because this country is being ruled by the Constitution."

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi said: "The chargesheet is a shame for the top leader of the RJD but instead of being ashamed they are giving nonsense arguments. We want point-wise explanation on the chargesheet, and no talk."
