Woman set ablaze by husband

Khadiza Khatun, 18, and pregnant, was set ablaze by her estranged husband Ajgar Ali at Koimari part III village under Agomani police station of Dhubri district on Monday morning, for not bringing dowry.

Dhubri: Khadiza Khatun, 18, and pregnant, was set ablaze by her estranged husband Ajgar Ali at Koimari part III village under Agomani police station of Dhubri district on Monday morning, for not bringing dowry.

Khadiza is currently admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and battling for her life. She was first admitted to Dhubri civil hospital, but the doctors who tended to her said she had suffered over 90 per cent burn injuries.

She was referred to GMCH for further treatment.

They got married five months back and Khadiza was four months pregnant.

Her family members alleged that Ali along with her in-laws had planned to kill her. Khadiza's elder brother, Mostafajur Rahman Khan, alleged that day after day she was abused and threatened by her in-laws for not being able to bring any dowry.

Joy Shankar Sarma, circle officer, Dhubri, rushed to the Dhubri civil hospital and recorded her statements.

No arrests have been made.
