The Indian Army continued with its rescue operations in north Sikkim for the second day on Sunday, helping around 300 stranded tourists cross landslide-hit areas so that they could head for capital Gangtok.

According to army sources, troops of Trishakti Corps, headquartered in Sukna, made the rescue efforts.

“There was a report that around 300 tourists in Lachen and Lachung were attempting to come down but were stranded in an area where road connectivity had snapped as a bridge had washed away,” said source. "By 11am, all 300 were assisted to cross the area on a temporary bridge built by the army."

Lachen and Lachung, in Mangan district close to the India-China border, are popular tourist spots.

Tourists were also given food, a resting place and the medical help required by the army.
