Sikkim police on Sunday arrested an ad hoc employee of the state education department for allegedly duping a person of cash by promising a government job.

Naina Singh Gurung, a resident of Ravangla in Namchi district, was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged against him by officials of the department of personnel at the Sadar police station in Gangtok on Saturday.

“Gurung has been booked under IPC sections 419 and 420 (for duping) and section 120b (criminal conspiracy),” said a police source.

Gurung had allegedly taken money from a person who had applied for a government job after promising to get her the appointment order from the department of personnel.

“He had told the victim that he was an employee of DoP. We are yet to find out the exact amount he had extracted from the victim and are also investigating if he had duped others in the same manner,” said the source.

Rinzing Chewang Bhutia, the secretary of the department of personnel, said the matter was brought to the notice of the department by a person concerned by sharing a telephonic conversation between Gurung and his victim where he was heard demanding money for securing her job.

“We would like to appeal to the people not to entertain any such approaches and instead immediately report the matter to the police or DoP,” he said.
