Hundreds of women and girl students from colleges and universities in the city condemned the alleged “undemocratic ways” of the state government and the Kamrup (metro) district administration on Saturday for not receiving a memorandum they wanted to submit to governor Jagdish Mukhi.

The women, including pregnant and lactating mothers, protested in front of the Raj Bhavan under the banner, Padatik Nari Samaj. They demanded scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, immediate release of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and others arrested by the NIA on sedition charge and checking gender discrimination.

The protesters marched from Lakhidhar Bora Khsetra near Dighalipukhuri and staged a protest near the Raj Bhavan for two hours. However, no representative came out to receive the memorandum. Instead, police stopped the protesters about 100 metres from the Raj Bhavan by erecting a barricade. Pooja Nirala, one of the organisers, alleged that senior police officers also did not receive their memorandum. Rather, they dispersed them forcefully, injuring five women protesters.

Panbazar assistant commissioner of police Pahary Konwar said, “The governor was out of station. We asked the protesters to submit their memorandum through the police commissioner. However, they demanded a official representative to receive the memorandum, which was not possible at that moment.”
