Shubman Gill hasn’t had a great World Test Championship final with the bat. In the first innings, he was caught behind the wicket for 28, and then was dismissed lbw for a meagre eight in the second.
This has urged former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar to come up with a piece of advice for the 21-year-old. While speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar said, “He will have to work on his footwork, something that is obvious for everyone to see. Getting out to the ball leaving and coming back in is a problem. It’s always front foot. Right through this Test match, not once I saw him going back. He is really focussed on making sure he doesn’t get out to the ball that is pitched up. Again, he got caught up in making sure that the front pad is across and worried about the outswinger.”
Gill, who made his Test debut versus Australia in Melbourne last year, has played eight Test matches in his career and has three half-centuries to his name.
The Reserve Day of the ongoing final is underway.
On Day Five, Mohammed Shami sizzled with a four-wicket haul but could not stop New Zealand from taking a crucial 32-run lead as the Black Caps scored 249 runs after resuming at 101 for two. India, who scored 217 runs in their first innings, then ended the day at 64 for two with a 32-run lead. Rohit Sharma (30) was watchful until he misread a straighter one from Tim Southee that caught him in front of the wicket towards the end of day's play.
