Reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep withdrew from the Grand Slam tournament because of an injured left calf. Halep is ranked No. 3 but would have been seeded second at the All England Club because second-ranked Naomi Osaka pulled out of Wimbledon earlier.
Halep tore her calf during a match at the Italian Open in May and sat out the French Open, which she won in 2018 for the first of her two major championships.
In 2019, the last time Wimbledon was played, Halep beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Halep's withdrawal came shortly before the start of the draw at the All England Club. Play in the grass-court major tournament begins Monday.
Djokovic, Barty top seeds
Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic was named the top seed at Wimbledon earlier this week as he seeks a 20th Grand Slam title while Roger Federer and Serena Williams will begin the grass-court tournament next week seeded seventh. Top-ranked Ashleigh Barty is seeded first on the women's side. The Australian hasn't played since retiring from her second-round match at the French Open due to the flareup of an upper-leg injury.
Eighth-ranked Federer has the seventh seed because third-ranked Rafael Nadal is sitting out to rest and recover after his loss to Djokovic in the French Open semifinal.
Daniil Medvedev is the second seed, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem, although the Austrian retired from a match in Mallorca on Tuesday because of wrist pain.
At Roland Garros, Djokovic earned his 19th Grand Slam title to leave him one short of the record co-held by Federer and Nadal.
