Captain Kieron Pollard rued the West Indies’ below par bowling, especially at the death, which he feels is one of the main reasons for their defeat in the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

“I thought we gave away too many runs at the back end, especially in the last 20 overs. We were a bit indisciplined towards the end.

“We felt that it would be a good wicket. But India were able to get away from us at the back end,” Pollard said during the post-match presentation.

“However, it also showed that in order to win, they have to score big against us,” he added. Stressing the need for proper execution, the skipper believes conceding 40-50 runs less could have given the Windies a better opportunity for a successful chase.

“It was a matter of execution for us. We were not able to execute our plans the way we wanted them to. Had we given away 40-50 runs less, it might have been a little different,” Pollard said, adding: “But Rohit (Sharm) batted well and so did KL Rahul.

“That allowed the other batsmen to play freely with the platform laid.” Pollard also heaped praise on the Windies youngsters, particularly Nicholas Pooran whose 47-ball 75 and partnership with Shai Hope had Indians under some pressure.

“There are some youngsters and there are some talented ones. As for Pooran, we got a glimpse of him in this game. “Nothing happens overnight, as it’s about putting the pieces of puzzle together,” Pollard said.

The Windies, Pollard asserted, will give it their all in the decider on Sunday.
