Virat Kohli on Saturday said the law and order situation in Guwahati — due to the ongoing protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act — was “absolutely safe” for international cricket but refrained from making any “irresponsible” comment on the contentious Act.

“The city is absolutely safe. We’ve not seen any problem on the roads. And on the issue, I do not want to be irresponsible and speak on something that has legal opinions on both sides. Need to have total information, total knowledge of what it means and what is going on and then be responsible to give your opinion on it.

“Because you can say one thing and then someone can say another thing. So I would not like to get involved in something that I don’t have total knowledge of, and it’s not going to be responsible on my part to comment on it,” Kohli said.

Kohli’s Sri Lankan counterpart Lasith Malinga expressed his ignorance about the political and law and order impasse in the city over the past month and said he was here to play cricket. “We don’t have much idea about it. We are here to play cricket and it feels great to play cricket in front of Indian fans,” he said.

The city had witnessed unprecedented protests since December 10, the day the Citizenship Amendment Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha, which left five persons dead in police action. Curfew was imposed in the city for over a week. Peaceful protests continued in the city till date.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has said that the forced four-month break due to a stress fracture “wasn’t a difficult” period for him. “It was not difficult for me as I was never in pain. Not even for a single day. I took it as an opportunity to build my strength,” Bumrah told bcci.tv.
