Currently training under legendary coach Freddie Roach, star boxer Vijender Singh is confident of doing well in his debut bout in the United States next month.
Though his promoters are yet to name the opponent for the Indian on April 12, Vijender said he was immensely benefited by Roach’s training style in the last few days. The 59-year-old American coach has produced more than 30 world champions in different weight categories over the years including Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de La Hoya and James Toney.
“I am thrilled to start my training under such a legendary figure in world boxing,” Vijender said. “It’s a great honour for me to train with Freddie, who has already trained the likes of so many world champion boxers.
“Professional boxing in the US is of the highest level, and I believe Freddie is the right man to bring the best out of me. I look forward to showing the boxing fans a new and improved Vijender Singh. I know that with Freddie’s guidance, I can become a world champion,” added the professional boxer, who has remained unbeaten in the circuit in his 10 appearances so far.
Talking about Vijender, the coach said one should remember the fact that Vijender was an Olympic medal winner at the amateur level. “I believe Vijender has the talent and the dedication to become a world champion. He has a great amateur background, a style that will give any super middleweight in the world problems, and power in both hands,” said Roach.
After winning the bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics, Vijender turned professional at the age of 30 in 2015, but has not lost a bout since then. He currently has two titles under his belt in the super middleweight category — WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental crowns. He has not entered the ring since December 2017 but is preparing to clinch the world title.
After being based in Manchester for some time, he has shifted to Los Angeles in the US for better training facilities.
