Manchester United’s first team may play a match against East Bengal in the city next year as part of the latter’s centenary celebrations.
A four-member Manchester United delegation — Allan John Dawson, Manchester United’s director of football, Christoffer Laurens Komen, director of tours and friendlies and officials Philip Malcolm Smith and Matthew Charles Jones — met state sports minister Aroop Biswas at Nabanna on Thursday.
The match would be part of United’s pre-season Asia tour and will be played in last week of July or first week of August 2020. The delegates also inspected the Salt Lake Stadium and held a meeting with East Bengal officials.
If United come to Calcutta then for the second time a big club from Europe will be playing at the Salt Lake Stadium. Bayern Munich had come calling in the summer of 2008 for Oliver Kahn’s testimonial match.
Their opponents were East Bengal’s arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.
United are expected to play a match in Bangladesh also.
