Umesh Yadav took three wickets as County Select XI were bundled out for 220 at stumps on the second day of India’s tour match at Durham on Wednesday. The visitors thus took a 91-run lead after finishing on 311 in their first innings.

Haseeb Hameed celebrated his Test recall with a gritty 112 off 246 balls. Coming back into the England squad after nearly five years, the right-handed opener lived up to his reputation of being called ‘Baby Boycs’ for his dogged approach like legendary Geoffrey Boycott.

Mohammed Siraj claimed two wickets while Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja took one each.

County XI were reeling at 56 for 4 but Lyndon James (27) gave good support to Hameed during their 75-run stand for the fifth wicket. The partnership helped them reach a respectable total.

Hameed’s 321-minute vigil ended with an edge to KL Rahul off Shardul.

Captain Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the warm-up game because of a stiff back, turned up in the nets on Wednesday. Kohli took throwdowns from batting coach Vikram Rathour under the watchful eyes of head coach Ravi Shastri.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was also rested for a swollen hamstring.

Avesh Khan, who turned out for County Select XI at ECB’s request after two of their players were unavailable, is likely to miss the rest of the tour because of a fracture in his left thumb which he suffered on the opening day of the match. A medical bulletin released by the BCCI, however, said that the reserve fast bowler “remains under observation of the medical team. He will not be taking any further part” in the match.

He will be the second player to be ruled out of the tour with an injury after Shubman Gill, who has since returned home and will undergo rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
