From athletics to football, here’s how the sentiment against Russia unfolded

Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has urged sports federations and organisers to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international events.

Football

Fifa and Uefa have barred Russian national and club teams from their competitions “until further notice”. The decision can effectively end Russia’s chances of qualifying for the Qatar World Cup. The football associations of Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic have also refused to play Russia.

Formula One

The Russian Grand Prix, scheduled for September 25, has been cancelled.

Ice hockey

The International Ice Hockey Federation suspended all Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs from its competitions until further notice. It also stripped Russia of the hosting rights for the 2023 junior world championships.

Skating

The International Skating Union said no athletes from Russia or Belarus “shall be invited or allowed to participate” in events until further notice. The world figure skating championships are scheduled for later this month.

Skiing

The International Ski Federation has barred Russians and Belarusians from competing in its events.

Athletics

World Athletics, headed by Sebastian Coe, has issued a blanket ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes.

Basketball

Russia has been suspended by the International Basketball Federation. That will hit Russia’s bid to qualify for next year’s men’s World Cup.

Volleyball

The International Volleyball Federation has stripped Russia of hosting the men’s world championships in August-September & suspended Russian teams and clubs from international events.

Judo

The International Judo Federation (IJF) has suspended Russian president Vladimir Putin as its honorary president. The IJF also said it cancelled the 2022 Grand Slam in the Russian city of Kazan, scheduled to be held from May 20 to 22.

Fencing

Ukrainian fencers withdrew from the World Championships in Cairo to avoid a match with Russia.

Rugby

Rugby’s world governing body banned Russia and Belarus from all international rugby “until further notice”. Russia’s membership in World Rugby has been suspended indefinitely.

Badminton

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) cancelled all sanctioned tournaments in Russia and Belarus, banning them from hosting future tournaments “until further notice”.

Taekwondo

World Taekwondo has decided to strip President Putin of an honorary black belt.

Swimming

Swimming’s global governing body FINA called off the World Junior Swimming Championships that were to take place in Kazan (August 23-28). FINA also withdrew the order it awarded Putin in 2014. But they haven’t banned Russian swimmers from competing yet.

Equestrian Sports

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) executive board called for all international events to be removed from Russia and Belarus.
