Valencia in early part of the new millennium were a force to reckon with. They played the Champions League finals in two successive years (1999-2000 and 2000-01) and Gaizka Mendieta was a vital cog in the wheel.

Now the former Spain international is confident that Valencia would qualify for the knock-out stages of the tournament.

Valencia host Chelsea in a group H match at the Mestalla with a lot at stake. Ajax, Chelsea and Valencia are tied at seven points after four matches with the Dutch side topping the group by virtue of a better goal difference.

“This is going to be difficult season for Valencia. I hope they qualify for Champions League in La Liga and pray they go as far as possible this season. They have an important match against Chelsea on Wednesday. I am confident they will do well,” Mendieta told The Telegraph.

Mendieta is bowled over by the rampaging Liverpool and their manager Juergen Klopp. “Klopp, since he came to Anfield, has done an amazing job at Liverpool. Whether it’s the Premier League or the Champions League, Liverpool are the team to watch. They are the defending champions and this season too their form is ominous.

“It’s such a joy to watch Liverpool these days. Their attacking style of football is so pleasing to the eye,” Mendieta said. Mendieta though is not happy with the way Barcelona, a team he turned up for on loan in 2002-03, are playing.

“When the chips are down they just look towards (Lionel) Messi. But you know other players will have to step up too. Sadly I am not seeing that right now.”

Mendieta also is not putting his money on Juventus. “Last season I thought they had a very good chance. This year I do not think they are one of the favourites. But then they have Cristiano Ronaldo. So, anything is possible,” the 45-year-old, who is now a panellist on Sony Pictures Sports Network Kick-Off Show for Champions League, said.
