India face a tricky test against Great Britain in the quarter final of the men’s hockey on Sunday in the ongoing Tokyo Games. India defeated hosts Japan 5-3 in their last match of Pool A on Friday to finish second behind Australia. Great Britain finished third in Pool B.

Striker Gurjant Singh (17th, 56th), Harmanpreet Singh (13th), Shamsher Singh (34th) and Nilakanta Sharma (51st) scored as India recorded their third consecutive win. Kenta Tanaka (19th), Kota

The other last-eight matches are Australia versus the Netherlands, Germany versus Argentina and Belgium versus Spain.

Looking to keep their winning run intact, the Indians went on the offensive from the beginning and penetrated the Japanese attacking third on several occasions.

Despite exerting continuous pressure on the rival defence, the Indians could manage only one clear shot at the goal in the first 10 minutes.

Soon India secured their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet made no mistake in giving his side the lead. India doubled their lead two minutes into the second quarter. “We played at a much higher tempo tonight (Friday). We will need a lot of that on Sunday, too,” chief coach Graham Reid said.

Earlier, Navneet Kaur scored a late winner as the women’s team kept their quarter finals hope alive with a 1-0 win over Ireland.
