After Akash Deep gave them the upper hand, debutant Ritwik Roy Chowdhury confirmed Bengal the much-needed three points from the rain and bad light-affected Ranji Trophy Elite Group A clash against Gujarat at Eden Gardens.

Akash recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket by adding two more to his overnight tally of four wickets, finishing with 6/60 as Gujarat were bundled out for 194.

In reply, Bengal were in a spot of bother at 93/3 with captain Abhimanyu Easwaran (42) too back in the hut, while a bout of viral fever forced Koushik Ghosh to leave the ground.

However, coming in at No.6, Ritwik remained steady and hit an unbeaten 53 after sharing critical partnerships with Manoj Tiwary and Sreevats Goswami to secure the three points Bengal were desperately looking for.

Saha’s presence

Bengal may include Wriddhiman Saha in their final home match, versus Delhi, which begins January 27, subject to his fitness.

Saha was present at the Eden in the afternoon. He is likely to leave for the NCA on Thursday and will then come to know if he can play a game or two before leaving for New Zealand.

For transparency

The CAB will make members of the Bengal support staff adhere to the transparency chapter in its modified constitution in order to deal with conflict of interest issues. That implies none from the support staff will be able to write columns or commentate in any game. A code of conduct will also be introduced for the players.

Meanwhile, the SGM to finalise the vacant CAB presidential post will be held towards the end of this month — either on January 30 or 31.
