England finished Day II at 111/2, trailing New Zealand by 267 runs in the first innings of the opening Test, after Devon Conway’s double ton stretched New Zealand’s total to 378.

The visitors were bowled out after lunch as England’s quicks cleaned up the middle order and the tail, but they were left frustrated by No.11 Neil Wagner (25 not out), who helped Conway set his record score.

Conway reached the milestone with a six and would have nearly carried his bat if not for a run-out dismissal, which saw him fall short of the crease by mere millimetres.

In reply, England lost two early wickets before tea with Kyle Jamieson trapping Dom Sibley leg before for nought, while Tim Southee had Zak Crawley caught behind. But Rory Burns (59 batting) and skipper Joe Root (batting on 42) steadied the innings.

Earlier, New Zealand resumed at 246/3 but lost wickets at regular intervals as Mark Wood picked up three for just seven runs in a fiery spell in the first session, while Ollie Robinson finished with 4/75 on his Test debut.
