Shakib-al Hasan’s all-round show and Mustafizur Rahman (4/36)’s clever bowling helped Bangladesh somewhat redeem themselves after the shock defeat to Scotland, as they prevailed over Oman by 26 runs in their second game of the T20 World Cup qualifiers at the Al Amerat Stadium on Tuesday.

After being dismissed for 153, Shakib and Mustafizur helped Bangladesh restrict Oman to 127/9.

This certainly is a crucial win for the Mahmudullah-led side as it keeps their hopes of making the Super-12 stage of the competition alive. They should be further upbeat in their final Group B game, which is against minnows Papua New Guinea, who made an early exit after losing to Scotland earlier in the day.

That said, Bangladesh weren’t really clinical in terms of their overall performance. Agreed their bowlers did well to bounce back strongly, but batting remains Bangladesh’s concern.

Electing to bat first, Bangladesh were two down early in the fifth over with opener Liton Das and Mahedi Hasan back in the dugout. But Mohammad Naim (64), the other opener, and Shakib (42) put up an efficient show with the bat to stitch a solid 80-run stand for the third wicket.

Bangladesh were well on their way to reaching at least around 170, but the fall of Shakib halfway in the 14th over, triggered a collapse. Following Shakib’s departure, Bangladesh lost their remaining seven wickets for just 52.

Naim too didn’t last long after Shakib’s dismissal, as it was purely due to captain Mahmudullah’s 10-ball 17 that Bangladesh could cross 150.

For Oman, 33-year-old left-arm quick Bilal Khan was their standout bowler, taking 3/18. Right-arm pacer Fayyaz Butt also struck thrice.

In reply, Oman were going at a steady pace, reaching 81/2 in the 12th over. But Shakib’s left-arm spin first got rid of Jatinder Singh in the last ball of the 13th over before he was brought back into the attack again in over No.17 to account for Ayaan Khan and Naseem Khushi off successive balls.

Oman’s chances were practically over then, as Mustafizur thereafter added two more to his tally of wickets after dismissing opener Aqib Ilyas and No.3 batsman Kashyap Prajapati earlier.

Shakib was adjudged Player of the Match.

Closer to Super 12s

In the other game, Richie Berrington slammed a stroke-filled 70 while Josh Davey snapped four wickets as Scotland inched closer to the Super-12 stage of the T20 World Cup with a 17-run win over PNG.

Scotland grabbed the top position in Group B with back-to-back wins, after having shocked Bangladesh in their opening game.

Berrington put on 92 off 65 balls with Matthew Cross (45) before adding another 33 with Calum MacLeod as Scotland posted a challenging 165 for 9 after opting to bat.

Kyle Coetzer’s men then produced a splendid bowling effort to skittle out PNG for 148 in 19.3 overs with Davey (4/18) emerging as their best bowler.

PNG had lost to Oman by 10 wickets in their first game. Chasing 166 to win, PNG needed their batters to fire, but they couldn’t get any momentum.
