Martin Guptill, nicknamed “Two Toes”, has recovered from his toe injury that he sustained after being hit by a yorker from Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf. Before the Black Caps — as the New Zealand team are known — took on India on Sunday, Guptill’s injury sparked a discussion on how Rauf could so precisely injure him on his remaining toes. The player has only two toes on his left foot, the result of it being crushed by a forklift when he was 13 years old.
So, when it was announced that Guptill would be in the playing XI, someone remarked that he had “tiptoed” past his injury to keep his place.
Ludhiana’s wrecker
Ish Sodhi, who picked up the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, was born in Ludhiana but is now becoming famous for destroying the Indian batting line-up. Currently, he is the leading wicket-taker against India in T20Is with 19 wickets from 13 games.
When India were struggling at 70/5, Indian supporters who had been pleading for one Pakistan wicket the previous Sunday, were pleading for 100 runs a week on. Then, when the New Zealand openers started fluently, another fan was heard wondering aloud if India would manage to take even one wicket.
It took India 176 runs and more than 20 overs across two games to get their first wicket of the World Cup — Pakistan had made 152 for no loss in 17.5 overs and New Zealand scored 24 in 3.4 overs before Guptill got out to Jasprit Bumrah.
