England will start as heavy favourites against Bangladesh when the two teams face off in the T20 World Cup on Wednesday.
While England started their Super 12 campaign with an emphatic win over defending champions the West Indies, Bangladesh were outplayed by Sri Lanka in their opening game.
The Bangladesh side have lacked sharpness and were also beaten by minnows Scotland in the Qualifiers that preceded the main round.
But England are alert not to be complacent or over-confident. Speaking at a virtual media conference ahead of the game, wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler said: “The way the tournament is set out, there’s not much room for mistakes. The beauty of T20 cricket is anyone can beat anyone on their day.
“But no, we prepare well and we are a very level team, (we) don’t get too high, don’t get too low and we’ll try to bring our level of intensity, which always brings our best level to the game.”
With the match starting in the afternoon, Eoin Morgan’s men will be tested in the oppressive heat of Abu Dhabi where temperature soars above 32 degrees Celsius.
But to the Englishmen’s advantage, the Abu Dhabi strip is known to be aiding the pacers. Morgan may think of bringing in Mark Wood into the mix at the expense of a batter on Wednesday. All-rounder Moeen Ali once again will be playing a very important role for England.
For Bangladesh, captain Mahmudullah will have to use his resources better.
Interestingly, England have never played Bangladesh in a T20I match.
When asked about that, Buttler said: “We’ve played against them lots in 50-over cricket. We know they are a dangerous side.”
