South Africa boosted their chances of qualifying for the T20 World Cup semis by thrashing Bangladesh by six wickets in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Bangladesh’s sorry campaign continued as they were bundled out for 84 in 18.2 overs. The Proteas overcame early jitters to chase down the target in 13.3 overs to consolidate their position in Group 1.
South Africa have three wins from four matches and will be playing their last group game against table-toppers England on Saturday. Bangladesh are out of contention having lost all their four matches so far.
The Proteas attack, led by speedsters Anrich Nortje (3/8) and Kagiso Rabada (3/20), decimated Bangladesh’s batting.
Bangladesh wouldn’t have crossed even the 80-run mark had it not been for Mahedi Hasan’s 27-run cameo.
Despite the small target, South Africa began their chase nervously as they lost Quinton de Kock (16), Reeza Hendricks (4) and Aiden Markram (0) cheaply.
However, skipper Temba Bavuma (31 not out) and Rassie van der Dussen (22) steadied the innings, being patient enough to settle on a surface that was assisting bowlers.
“The conditions reminded us of playing at home,” Bavuma said after the match.
