History is not something captain Babar Azam has in his thoughts ahead of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign opener against India in Dubai on Sunday.

India hold a 12-0 record in all formats of the World Cup against Pakistan but Babar said his mantra for the big day is to keep things simple and stay relaxed.

“Well, we’ve forgotten what happened in the past. We have played many events, did well in the Champions Trophy too. So the more we keep it simple, the better will it be.

“It’s about sticking to the basics and staying calm and relaxed. Our preparations are in our hands and we have given 100 per cent,” the 27-year-old said on the eve of the much-awaited clash.

Bowling has usually been Pakistan’s strength, but this time around, they seem to be pinning their hopes on their batsmen. “They way our batters have been performing over the last couple of months, I’m confident they will perform against India too,” the skipper, having a healthy average of 46.89 from 61 T20Is so far, asserted.

Bowling-wise, India appear stronger than Pakistan, and asked about his approach to tackling the pace and accuracy of Jasprit Bumrah, Babar replied: “I’ll look to play the ball, not the bowler.”

In their final XII, Pakistan have left out the experienced Sarfraz Ahmed and preferred veteran Shoaib Malik. “He (Shoaib) is good on the front foot and tackles spin very well. That’s why we have opted for him,” Babar reasoned.

Imran’s pep talk

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan gave no special message to the side for the India game, but did share his anecdotes, particularly during the 1992 World Cup where he led Pakistan to glory, before the team reached UAE.

“We had a meeting and he shared his experiences with us, his mindset in the 1992 World Cup and regarding his and the rest of the team’s body language,” Babar said.
