Sushil Kumar has won a berth in the World Wrestling Championships, but whether he can win a medal there is a topic of debate.

Sushil defeated Jitender Kumar 4-2 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Tuesday to earn a ticket in the 74kg category for the World Championships, to be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan from September 14 -22.

But what lies ahead for Sushil ? Truth is India’s only individual double Olympic medallist will have a mountain to climb.

“Sab thik ho jayega sir, Time hain abhi bhi. I will win a medal at the World Championships. Do not worry.” That’s what Sushil told The Telegraph.

At the Medved International wrestling tournament at Minsk, Belarus, Sushil made his return to the mat after a one-year- hiatus, but flopped miserably. The 36-year-old was pinned down in 90 seconds by world No. 5 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov.

“I fought well in Belarus. I won two bouts. And the wrestler I lost to wasn’t any pushover. Bekzod has beaten a lot of good wrestlers,” he said.

Last year in the Asian Games he lost his bout to Bahrain’s Adam Batirov. So will these reverses work at the back of his mind? “Not really. I am preparing well. I am in a happy space. So I’m confident of doing well at the World Championships,” he said.

The 74kg is supposed to be the toughest category in wrestling. It’s like the middleweight category in boxing. In 74kg a wrestler needs strength as well as technique. The problem with Sushil is he hasn’t had bouts against world-class wrestlers. “He is making a comeback. He is practising hard,” said Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary Wrestling Federation of India.
