The target was low but still Australia captain Aaron Finch’s powerful shots against Bangladesh on Thursday sounded like Diwali crackers going off in the stadium.
In the press box, just before Finch began to flog the Bangladesh bowlers, crew members of Talk 100.3 celebrated Diwali with West Indies legend Clive Lloyd, who is one of their commentators. Talk 100.3 is Channel 2 Group and Fun Asia’s recently launched South Asian sports and business radio station. As the Channel 2 group holds the audio rights for all the ICC events, they had requested their crew members to be dressed in the traditional Indian attire, in line with the festival of lights.
“Super Cat” Lloyd sported a brown shawl as a mark of support for the West Indies team and then enthralled everyone in the commentary box with his tales from the past.
He revealed that during his Test debut at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, the West Indies team had actually stayed in the stadium unlike in five-star hotels that players stay in these days.
Sorry sight
Bangladesh’s performance in this T20 World Cup has left the fans disappointed, still a lot of them turned up for the daytime match against Australia in Dubai. Half-way into the innings, most of the Bangladesh side was back in the dugout. A frustrated fan asked why did the teams need a drinks break for such a short innings. The press box was, too, filled with journalists from Bangladesh and as wickets fell at such a brisk pace no one could take their eyes off the field.
When it was time to leave, a number of Bangladeshi
fans were being interviewed by television channels — the usually vociferous fans
had not much to say and remained glum.
