India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expects Rahul Dravid to bring with him his “work ethic” as he takes over as the new head coach post the T20 World Cup.

And so Gavaskar is optimistic that Indian cricket will keep progressing in the coming days.

“Indian cricket should be going ahead and ahead. He will bring his vast experience, the work ethic that he embodied when he played the game, the deep thinking about tactics and so on,” Gavaskar told India Today.

The BCCI announced the appointment of Dravid as the head coach of the national team on Wednesday. He will be replacing Ravi Shastri.

Gavaskar thinks that now is the time for Dravid to observe, analyse and chalk out his plans for Indian cricket as the team plays in the T20 World Cup.

India, after two back-to-back losses against Pakistan and New Zealand, posted their first win of the tournament thrashing Afghanistan by 66 runs on Wednesday.

They have two group matches — against Scotland and Namibia — left.

“You need to have some instinctiveness during matches but you also need to be able to plan and I think this and the win over Afghanistan is probably the best news Indian cricket has had over the last one week or so,” the former captain said.

“There are still two more matches that India have to play. Right now it is time for Dravid to take stock of the situation and he will then decide what is best for Indian cricket,” Gavaskar added.
