A strong field awaits javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra at the Diamond League Meet in Stockholm on June 30, the Olympic gold medallist’s biggest event ahead of the World Championships in Eugene, US, next month.

But the 24-year-old will be high on confidence as he reaches the Swedish capital after winning gold at the Kuortane Games in Finland on June 18. This was Neeraj’s first win of the season, beating reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada for the second time this month.

Earlier this month, he had also won silver at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, with a national record throw of 89.30m.

Peters’ name is on the list of participants in Stockholm as are Czech Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch and bronze-winner compatriot Vitezslav Vesely — who shared the podium with Neeraj in Tokyo last August.

The Diamond League Meet will be the first time all the Tokyo Olympics javelin throw medallists will be in action together this season.

While Peters did not complete all his throws in an event at Orimattila in Finland on Wednesday, recording a best throw of 71.94m, Vadlejch returns after skipping the Kuortane Games. Same is the case for Germany’s Julian Weber, who returns after finishing fifth at Paavo Nurmi Games with 84.02m.

Finland’s Oliver Helander, who won gold at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a big throw of 89.83m, also returns after skipping Kuortane Games.

Another Indian, Murali Sreeshankar will also compete in the meet but his long jump event is listed as an additional event in the programme.

The long jump field is a strong one though with Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Tentoglou Miltiadis of Greece and World Indoor Championships silver winner Thobias Montler taking part.

Sreeshankar is also taking part in this event as a build-up for the World Championships (July 15-24) and the Commonwealth Games (July 28 to August 8).
