Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes wrestler Vinesh Phogat should get the silver medal as she had qualified for the final “cleanly and properly”.

The ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport will take time till Tuesday before deciding on Vinesh’s appeal against her disqualification from the 50kg final.

“If she (Vinesh) has won the pre-final event cleanly, she should get the medal,” Sourav said in New Town on Sunday. “Before every event, the weight must have been measured. I don’t know what the exact rule is. But I’m sure when she went into the final, she must have qualified properly. So when you go to the final, it’s either gold or silver. I don’t know whether she is disqualified rightfully or wrongfully. (But) She deserves a silver at least.”

‘Strict action’

The former BCCI president also emphasised the need for stringent action in the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. “Strict action needs to be taken. Anything can happen anywhere. So accordingly, CCTV cameras should be there and an adequate security system should be in place,” he said.
