Mumbai: Somdev Dev Varman demolished the 281st ranked Spanish player Gillermo Olaso 6-3, 6-2 to enter the second round of the $125,000 ATP Challenger men’s event in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Monday.
However, Davis Cupper and wild card entrant Rohan Bopanna crashed out losing to top-seeded Hsun Yen Lu of Chinese Taipei. He outplayed Bopanna 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and six minutes.
Somdev broke Olaso in the sixth game to take the first set. Going with the momentum, he broke his rival twice — in the third and seventh games — to wrap up the match.
In the second round Somdev will take on the winner of the match between Latvian Deniss Pavlovs and Russian Alexandre Kudryavtsev.
Bopanna did not get any ranking points but received $1300 as prize money.
