Federer regains fitness

Stuttgart: Seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer is healthy again and looking forward to the grass-court season. The former No. 1 underwent meniscus surgery after losing in the Australian Open semi-finals to Novak Djokovic and then missed the French Open because of a back injury. “It’s important to come back from injuries,” he said.

Nick letter

Sydney: Australia’s team boss for the Rio Olympics has defended the decision to send controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios a 16-page letter asking him to explain his behaviour if he wanted to be picked for the Games. “Someone needs to stand up,” Australia’s chef de mission for Rio, Kitty Chiller, said. 

Doping

Moscow: The Russian anti-doping agency has said six weightlifters, including former world and European junior champions have been banned for doping offences. The agency said 2014 world junior champion Larisa Kobeleva received a four-year ban and Nadezhda Ovchinnikova, the European junior champion in 2014, was banned for two years. 

Lahiri flops

Dublin: Anirban Lahiri closed with a three-over 75 on the final day and ended way down on the leaderboard at tied-61st at the Memorial Tournament here. His total was two-under 288. Meanwhile, William McGirt won the title for the first time in 165 starts on the PGA Tour. 

EB contract 

Calcutta: Coach Trevor James Morgan has signed a one-year contract with East Bengal on Monday. “Morgan has signed the contract and sent it through email,” East Bengal’s football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya said. 

Athletics

Calcutta: The 66th State Athletic meet will be held at SAI Eastern Centre, Salt Lake from June 9 to 12. Sprinter Pinki Pramanik will also compete in the meet after a gap of eight years. “There will be dope tests done this time around,” the secretary of Bengal Athletic Association, Kamal Maitra, said on Monday. 

Table tennis 

Calcutta: Vivekananda Club of Hindmotor emerged champions of WBTTA Junior League on Monday. They defeated Naihati Youth Association 5-4 in the finals. 

Super League

Calcutta: Shambazar scored 350/8 on the second day of their CAB first division Super League match against Town Club on Monday. Amir Gani scored 107 runs.
