Sania Mirza will probably return to competitive tennis sometime in January. “I started training earlier this month, and would be ready in time for the Australian Open,” Sania said at the Eden on Friday.

“I have not played professional tennis for nearly two years. So I am looking for a good comeback,” she told The Telegraph.

Asked if she was eyeing a possible Grand Slam victory in the coming season, she said: “Let me get a good start first and only then will I start thinking about winning a tournament. But I do believe I still have what it takes to win a win a Grand Slam.”

She should know. Saina has six Grand Slam titles under her belt — three in doubles and three in mixed doubles.

Sania had been following a rather hard training schedule, but was happy to respond to the invitation of Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly.

“Sourav invited me and my family personally, not only for this Test, but for a felicitation too. It is great to be a part of something so historic. I have known Sourav for a long time and there was no question of saying no,” Sania said.

She relishes the milieu at the Eden.

“I love the electrifying atmosphere. People of Calcutta are known for their love for the sport. I am myself a big fan of cricket. As a fan I can see how this new concept can work in the evening with people coming from work and watching. And everything at night is better usually. It is more dramatic. I also dressed up in pink to match the occasion.”

Sania loves to watch Virat Kohli play and is a big fan of the Team India captain.

“Virat is my favourite. He is the whole country’s favourite, isn’t he? I somehow feel older because all my friends have retired whether it was Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), Zak (Zaheer Khan) and so on. So I will go with Virat,” she said.

“I like to watch my husband Shoaib Malik playing too,” she added.
